High-speed GEO satellite
Viasat, Intelsat, Inmarsat/Viasat. Often usable for browsing, messaging, email and some streaming, but latency and crowding can be noticeable.
Messaging passes
Chat-only tiers. Usually text and photos in messaging apps, not full web. Useful when full internet is expensive or unavailable.
Shared aircraft bandwidth
Even a fast system is shared by everyone onboard. Speed tests can vary wildly by aircraft, route, weather, regulation and passenger load.

Cost: free for MileagePlus members on Starlink-equipped aircraft. Status: rapid rollout, including widebodies and many regional jets. Expect: one of the strongest options when the flight shows Starlink.

- Check the airline booking result for a Wi-Fi badge, Starlink badge or aircraft type.
- Search the aircraft tail or flight number close to departure if the airline has a tracker.
- Assume free access usually requires logging in to the airline loyalty program.
- Premium seats often get better or free access, but this is airline-specific.
- Voice and video calls may be blocked even when the connection can technically support them.
- For work, download key documents anyway; aircraft swaps are common.
